Shower & Hygiene Outreach

VMC’s new 5-stall shower trailer

Would you like to join us in this new venture?

We’re so excited to have the opportunity to offer our volunteer services to assist Volunteer Ministry Center (VMC) with their Mobile shower Outreach Program, located at the west end of the “safe space” operated by the city under the I-40 overpass (across the street from the KARM courtyard). VMC offers showers Monday-Thursday every week using their brand new 5-stall shower trailer (photos above). They have graciously invited us to use the tralier to offer showers on the weekend. We plan to get started by volunteering one Saturday each month.

From the feedback we received from the survey, we think the best time would be on a Saturday, rather than attempting to operate at the same time we’re serving lunch on the 4th Sunday of the month. I’m hoping that the 3rd Saturday of each month might be a good time for many people. We’d need to have a regular crew of five or six people to retrieve and set up the trailer, staff the showers, then tear down and return the trailer to VMC. I think this would be a good way to get started, with an eye toward a more frequent schedule to include an additional one or more Saturdays a month.

During the next few weeks I’d like to identify 4 team leaders who can give a full 4 hours (10:00 – 2:00) once every other month to supervise and be our trailer operations experts. These would be individuals who could drive the rig and know everything about setting it up and operating it. I’d like to arrange for a couple of training sessions with these team leaders during a weekday to learn the ins and outs of the operation.

What do you think? Are you willing to get involved in our shower and hygiene outreach? If you haven’t done so already, take our quick survey to answer a few questions and stay tuned for more information coming your way soon.
